Being a sports college the CCSC has a unique set of problems surrounding mental heath. Currently some Stage 5 students are working on meditation and mindfulness in order to help them cope with the stresses that come with a full time sports and academic program. Helen has been working hard with teaching staff on the program and has been having success.
Headspace is the mental health service provider that works predominantly with young people and is the current service that the college is employing to help students who are facing mental health issues. Headspace is very active in promoting meditation and mindfulness as a way of improving mental health outcomes for students.
Below is a link to the Headspace page that reviews the importance of mental health in college communities and the important role that leadership plays in helping students. Of note is the app “smiling mind” that helps both teachers and students perform at their best everyday. It is a free download.
If you think your child is needing a little bit of extra help at college I would encourage you to get in touch with your child’s mentor teacher who can help.
