Once again this year I went on camp with all the students and staff.
I’m a camper at heart and a comment I often hear is, ‘It’s not camping if something doesn’t go wrong.’
The weather was a challenge for some of the stages; Stage 2 encountered dust storms as it had not rained since we were there last year and then that turned into rain storms. I believe that these little ones did quite well considering what they went through – I did spend a lot of my time zipping up doors and windows on the tents but for some it was all too late.
Stage 3 had great weather and I saw some strong relationships being built between the kids and staff.
Stage 4 had the bad weather return with rain and wind but once again the kids survived with ease. We also had to deal with a power outage one day which caused some issues but nothing too drastic.
I hope the kids had the chance to see me in a different light as we never really get to interact. I really enjoyed seeing them get back to basics and embracing nature. One of the best moments was watching Stage 4 boys and girls using a large rope as a skipping rope and taking it in turns running and jumping through it.
After the rain the wildlife was out in force; I saw an eagle with almost a three metre wing span, echidnas, wallabies, kangaroos, a giant goanna and a turtle.
I personally had a great time and I really hope the students enjoyed the chance to have some downtime away from the normal day-to-day routine.
