I’ve recently done some work in the community space, one particular program facilitating ten local primary colleges for a ‘Girls Football Experience’ on Friday mornings.
Previously, competition games between the colleges would be on big fields with large numbered games (9v9,11v11) with lots of ‘wait time’ for players in between matches.
An inspired young teacher decided to transform the format into a dynamic, thriving football experience for young girls.
Using 4 games on each half of the field.
2 teams of 5-6 girls rotate around each game every 10 or so minutes.
The varying, small-sided games means there’s plenty of action per player, and the game then becomes the teacher.
I am one of the facilitators whose job is to help organise the set-up and support the game dynamics.
The best part is observing and mediating for the players with their self-organisation and problem solving, whilst seeing young girls find confidence and fall in love with the game.
Would recommend this set-up for any colleges or grass-roots sports program 🙂
