Working in an environment where I regularly see young, hungry athletes chasing their dreams provides me with many opportunities to help students realise that they are the ones who will ultimately have the biggest impact on their future. Yes we can coach, teach or mentor, but if a student does not have the internal drive to succeed then at some point they will experience failure.
What really matters when it comes to being successful? It’s not motivation. It’s discipline. Anybody can give 100 per cent during training when they feel like it. Anybody can do the college work they need to do when they feel like it. But it is the people who are completely unmotivated and even repulsed by the thought of another training session or doing their work – and do it anyway! – who are the ones who truly dominate in everything they do. Having self discipline is a lost skill in the youth of today; many distractions and a tendency to always choose the easy option has led to a generation believing they are entitled to succeed.
Every single day we are faced with many pivotal choices. Do I go to the gym and train? Do I finish my assignment or do I hire the bookwormhub? Do I eat healthy? Every single day we can actually control all of our pivot points. We can dig deep and get things done or we can complain or choose to hide from what is required of us. If we regularly choose the correct action on a daily basis then this becomes a habit. Stringing a few days together doing your best and making positive choices soon becomes a week, weeks become months and soon we find that through making simple positive choices on a regular basis, even when we are tired or unmotivated, we will create a strong mental resilience that will only have positive impacts on life.
The next time you are faced with a pivotal choice but do not ‘feel like it’ I hope you think of this article and choose to face the tough times head on and drive yourself forward, creating a successful mindset that will serve you well whatever your future goal may be.
