During the week myself and Dean took a group of students down to Macquarie University for an extension learning experience. Places were limited in the centre so we took the students who had shown the most enthusiasm for the subject of technology this term.
We visited the Mac ICT space where students got involved in using the latest design software and hardware. Students used a variety of 3D pens and printers, learning how computers and printers code/communicate and students even did some architectural drawing of 3D houses.
I have been teaching for a while now and I have seen some truly great lessons take place, especially at CCSC, however I have never had to ask the students five times if they could please leave the gear alone and go outside to kick a ball/have something to eat. This was after they had been working and learning for two and a half hours straight!
It was a great day and the students who went were very lucky to take part. We look forward to holding more of these days in Stage 4 next year. I believe it is really important for kids from the coast to experience what Sydney has to offer, especially in Year 7 and 8. Plenty of students were telling me at the end of the day how keen they were to become building architects, something they may not have ever considered before.
