Our Kinder Safety Inspectors are at it again and have been working very hard towards the back end of the year! They’ve had safety training from some of our emergency services and have finished filming their videos to spread their safety messages. We have also been busy with Celebration Evening preparations, but I’ll leave the details of that a surprise for you (except to say that you do not want to miss their performance on Wednesday night)!
EMERGENCY SERVICES ‘TRAINING’
Last Tuesday, our training day began with a walk over to Kariong Fire Station. The kids’ eyes lit up when they saw the huge fire trucks parked in the garage. The firemen on duty were so welcoming and took us for a full tour of the station. We learnt all about what it means to work for NSW Fire and Rescue, including some of the protective gear they wear on the job. Of course, the kids had to try it on for size. Next we went outside for the most exciting part of the visit, an up-close and hands-on look at one of the fire trucks! We learnt about lots of equipment on the truck and even got to climb up and sit in the passenger seats ourselves. But the highlight was definitely getting to experience what it’s like to hold and spray the massive hoses!
After the fire station we headed back to college, where we then had a visit from two local police officers. The women talked about the role of the police in our community and how to keep ourselves safe. And the kids didn’t let them get away without showing and explaining all of the weapons they carry!
Our final treat was a FaceTime call on our big screen with local doctor, Dr Kelly, who at the time was on a shift at Gosford Hospital. Dr Kelly showed us around the hospital via her mobile and taught us all about different medical equipment and what can happen at the hospital in a medical emergency.
Peta and I were both super-impressed at the kids’ discussion input, the answers they gave and the questions they asked during the entire ‘training’ day, and it actually highlighted to us just how much the class has learnt this term about staying safe.
SAFETY VIDEO FILMING
For our project, the students were split into groups and asked to produce a video which teaches others about their chosen road safety topic (bus, car, pedestrian or wheels). Over the term they made their own props, developed the characters and wrote the scripts. And this week it was finally time to put it all together for filming. There was excitement in the air and the kids relished the opportunity to be actors and actresses for a day in front of the camera (although they needed a lot of reminding to wait for the record button to be pressed). It was really rewarding to see their ideas come to life during the filming process and the bloopers, ohh the bloopers, were so much fun!! I don’t want to spoil the surprise for our Kinder parents before next week, but stay tuned for an update with the final version of their safety videos.
Hope you enjoy the photos and stay safe everybody!
