As I have been reflecting on 2016 and the many new experiences our students have been exposed to, I can’t help but consider the place of “The Arts” in a young person’s life. This became particularly evident when on a recent excursion many of our Stage 4 students had not been to an art gallery, a theatre or Botanical Gardens. Some of our students had not seen the Sydney Opera House or been to Sydney. Although I am a huge advocate of the importance of children and young adults playing and learning outside, I also believe that children must be exposed to authentic experiences pertaining to the arts from an early age.
The article below by prominent author Philip Pullman, explains the importance of exposing children to artistic and cultural experiences:
I also encourage you to take your child to visit an art gallery or live theatre over the holiday break. One good way to do this is to be involved in The Sydney Festival in January. Many of their events are free and spread throughout the city.
