We have all heard the statement, “Be the best you can be”, but how do we actually go about making that happen?
Every great coach is an expert motivator. They take pride in being able to draw the best out of a player on a regular basis and in helping them to perform at their highest level time and time again.
Every good player wants to win. They love the competition and thrive on playing well.
There is an underlying key factor though, to being a truly great player and to becoming a truly great champion.
That player expects to be the best. It’s almost a sixth sense. They trust their ability and can, on many occasions, be arrogant about it. They strive to be better than the person next to them. They strive to make the best teams and then make it their mission to be the best player on that team. They walk on court and appear to have won most matches before they even strike a ball. They seem to always be in the right position.
They “Expect to be the best”.
I believe this is an essential ingredient to becoming truly great at what you do. Whether that be tennis, football, academics or just in general every day life.
The greats of our world work extremely hard. Federer, Ronaldo, Murray, Messi, Branson, Williams, even the now famous Donald Trump. They all believe in their ability and have that constant persona of being the best.
There is certainly no magic formula to achieving being the best, just a simple expectation.
Expect to be the best.
Listen to your coaches, teachers and parents. Ask the right questions. Work hard to improve. Keep developing. Be one percent better every day. Take no shortcuts. Learn from your mistakes. Be respectful. Be graceful in defeat and triumphant in victory. Smile. Concentrate on the task at hand.
Expect to be the best.
Play hard. Work harder. Stay fit. Eat well. Train your brain. Challenge yourself. Make no excuses. Take notice. Breathe. Laugh.
Expect to be the best.
Remember this simple formula and amazing things will happen.
You will no longer expect to be the best. You will simply know you are the best.
