Next week we start a gaming technology project and as you may or may not know, I’m a fan of TED Talks.
I listened to this talk recently by Anthony Goldbloom and it seemed timely with what the kids will be doing for the rest of the term in this project.
Goldbloom is a 33 year old Aussie and the founder and CEO of Kaggle. They use predictive modelling to solve problems for NASA, Wikipedia, Ford and Deloitte. Kaggle has improved on ‘state-of-the-art’ across a range of fields, including mapping dark matter and HIV/AIDS research.
What’s even more impressive is that he represented Australia at the 2001 29er Sailing World Championships whilst still at college and managed to go to uni as well. Goldbloom has achieved a lot academically and in his sporting and business life.
While it’s always good to see an Aussie doing well on the world stage (at anything), his talk confirms that no matter what, the world still needs humans who are creative. We still need problem solvers, those who are opportunistic and can think outside the square. Computers arguably can’t do that (yet).
I guess he is an example of someone who has redefined technology but still sees the value in human thinking. That’s all we want our kids to do – THINK!
