Recently IFS was asked to take part in the second annual Food Revolution Day. A Jamie Oliver initiative, Food Revolution Day is aimed at educating and supporting a college’s decicision to supply wholesome fresh food to students.
“Access to good, fresh, nutritious food is every child’s human right. It’s easy to agree with this, but the reality is an astounding 41 million children under the age of five are overweight or obese, while another 159 million kids are too short for their age. None of these children are growing healthy. Jamie is calling on us all to join a global food revolution in order to provoke debate and inspire real, meaningful, positive change in the way our children access, consume and understand food.” (jamiesfoodrevolution.org/about)
Kooindah Waters Golf Club provided the venue. The IFS marquee held a display and around eight staff helped out on the day. Our goal was to spread the IFS message of positive development through education, sports and nutrition. This message was met with great positivity as were the complimentary footballs, fruit salad and hats that were given out to the hundreds of attendees.
As we were set up at Kooindah Waters between two golf greens, a game of “closest to the pin” using footballs was played which kept both kids and adults amused. Other stalls included a pushbike powered blender, in which you could make your own smoothie, Hello Fresh (a to-your-door healthy dinner solution), and healthy cooking demonstrations.
What surprised me the most was how many people who approached us had children enrolled in our college, or had friends or family enrolled with us. It was very clear that the IFS message is getting out there, and is being met with a lot of praise by those we spoke to.
Overall the day was very successful and we look forward to being a part of it again next year. Anything we can do to educate our children to eat a large variety of fresh food will always be supported by the IFS Cafe!
