Once again Swimming Carnival day was upon us and what a day it was! The Houses of Chapman, Dolan, Roberts and Spindler were well represented and the “names” themselves were all there to witness the swimming competitions. Yes they were all hoping to claim the swimming title of 2016 but as we all know, there can only be one winner.
The event was held at Mingara again and it was well organised by Gavin and his helpers this year. All the house captains were given a job to do outside of their own swimming races whether it was as timekeeper, assistant starter, line manager or any number of other jobs. Brad Porter and Andre Gumprecht were the lifesavers this year but weren’t required in that role.
The races started at 09.45am and the last and probably “BEST” race was at 3.20pm where the best of the best matched themselves against some of the teachers and coaches. Staff had one lane covered with Todd, Andre, Patrick and Marty and another lane with Bec, Joey, Emily and Melissa Trew. The best of almost each age group was represented in a relay of 4 x 50m.
Last year the teachers/coaches won against some great swimming talent from the students so we had to defend our title. Todd started off well and Andre was second to swim. He started slowly but that was all just to cover up the technique and consistency of his freestyle stroke – he caught up on the opposition and got us into first position. Then it was myself and I managed to hold on and maintain the lead until I tapped the wall to unleash Marty, who had about a 10m lead on Matt Caisley (roadrunner in water). He swam for his life and the honour of the staff. He finished fantastically and won it “AGAIN” for the staff in 2016. What a relay this was with lots of parents present for this magical moment.
It was a fantastic event again and we have to congratulate House Chapman for the overall win this year. Close second was House Spindler and third, House Dolan. Last but not least was House Roberts. We can’t win them all I say as a Roberts employee.
Thanks to all who made the day a fantastic Swimming Carnival and I can’t wait for the Athletics Carnival.
Patrick
