Following on from Damien’s blog a few week’s ago, I wanted to share how our family experience of college has changed. To put this into context, my boy would be full of excuses not to go to college, count down to college holidays and would need to be bribed to actually go to college. As parents, we found this frustrating, especially being that academically he was performing well and wasn’t behaving poorly at college. He couldn’t verbalise what the issue was for him, but he never told us about his college day.
So after nearly two terms at IFS/ITS, this is what is different:
1. He willingly gets ready for college and has started to pack his own bag.
2. He talks about college – not just the training side, but what happens in the classroom. He quotes his teachers and coach!
3. We don’t have to stress about incomplete homework or justify why as a family we prefer family time to homework time.
4. He has developed relationships with students across the college and has many older role models.
5. He is in an environment where he is encouraged to problem solve, think and be himself.
And finally – my boy is happy to come to college. School makes him happy!
