A quality we aim to instil in our students is the ability to change a problem into a challenge. Students should relish this challenge, for once they overcome it not only have a solution but a sense of accomplishment.
Below is one of my favourite quotes
This quote is especially relevant to students in the Mathematics classroom.
Traditional approaches such as copying questions out of textbooks in earlier years of education often cause disengagement and disinterest in Maths.
Here at IFS through our Project Based Learning, we aim to for creative engaging, collaborative and meaning Mathematical experiences. Students utilise the Mathematical concepts in real life and live the Maths as well as learn it.
An example of this approach is in Stage 5 students are about to begin a project investigating Lung Capacity as part of the term 1 topic Measurement. Through the use of a spirometer students will investigate, discover and compare their own lung capacity against their peers. They will also identify and explain how the respiratory system works with other systems of the human body.
With the correct attitude towards Mathematics students can achieve great results and build a strong mathematical ability for later years of study.
