Hello IFS Family,
Stage 4 (year 7 and 8) has just completed maths for the term, covering the fundamental high college units for data collection, data analysis and probability.
These three topics are not typical high college mathematic modules. They require students to collect their own sets of data through a variety of methods and then interpret that data accordingly. This is a little different from the standard method of giving an equation and expecting students to memorise and regurgitate it.
This type of maths allowed many students who are not traditionally strong at arithmetic and calculation to grow their confidence. A high quality of work was produced across the class. Some students excelled at data collection due to their extended peer group, some students excelled at graphing due to their ability to visualise data and produce quality diagrams. Confidence in one’s abilities is crucial for learning, especially in mathematics, making this term a great success.
I’m looking forward to teaching maths with stage 4 in 2015. We have a focus on length, area and volume for the term.

P.S. I included a cool little graph on the use of multiples of “o” in the word “goal” used in social media during the World Cup. Enjoy.
