This is not an easy subject to talk about. I believe that quite a few parents would be disgusted at the way some of the students treat the buffet at lunch time. I understand there are time constraints on the lunch service, but there is no reason for the chaos that prevails from students throwing fruit salad, yoghurt and honey all over the table, not to mention the salads and spreads.
Stage 2 and 3 students are great – wiping tables over, pushing chairs in and ensuring overall cleanliness. The older groups could learn a lot from these younger students.
Last fortnight’s menu:
Monday – Spaghetti bolognaise with an Italian spinach crunch salad
Tuesday – Chunky steak pie with a puff pastry top and a baby spinach, tomato, onion and fetta salad
Wednesday – Chicken and vegetable stir fry on pad Thai noodle with crunchy bean winter salad
Thursday – Beef rissoles with mash potato, pea braise, honey carrots and gravy
Friday – Chicken breast burgers with lentil salad and all the trimmings
Monday – Penne boscaiola with parmesan cheese and seasonal salad
Tuesday – Shepherd’s pie with egmont cheese and a shredded salad
Wednesday – Minestrone soup with wholemeal parbake roll
Thursday – Creamy chunky chicken pie with puff pastry topper with a bring-on-spring salad
Friday – Wholemeal wraps with chicken or ham and all the salad trimmings
Ingredient in the spotlight: Tomato
This fruit is the epitome of a cancer–fighting super food. Tomatoes contain lycopene, the antioxidant phytochemical that also helps prevent heart disease. They’re also a good source of vitamins A, C, and E which are all enemies of cancer-friendly free radicals.
Cooking tomatoes is the best way to consume them. Simmering tomatoes with some heart–healthy oil, such as olive oil, makes it easier for the body to absorb all of the beneficial properties.
Never store fresh tomatoes in the refrigerator! The cold temperature ruins their flavour and texture. Instead, keep them on the kitchen counter until you’re ready to use them.

Perhaps a Canteen DE-MERIT system to go on report cards might be a deterrent or a name and shame board for the offenders with a note home to advise parents of their unacceptable behaviour. Well done stage 2 and 3 students – you’re certainly a “class” above the older groups whom one would expect to have some pride in themselves and their college.

Thank you for your comments Ash & Jodi.
Congrats to the kids that are being respectful & helpful.
Menu looks fabulicious.
What is being done about those that don’t conform ?

Hi Ash and Jodi,
as a parent I am disgusted and hope that my son is not one of the offenders.
We have raised our son to be respectful (we hope its taken, but you cant be with them every minute of every day)
Thanks
Anthony

I did café duty for the first time last Friday and I have to say that I was really impressed with all the kids manners and how friendly and happy they were. So keep that part going just tame the wild buffet behaviour! The food was amazing. Don’t take it for granted kids!

Nick is always coming home and telling me what a fabulous lunch they have so sad to hear that the older role models don’t respect such a great cafe that you run and provide a great lunch everyday I am sure their mums and dads would be horrified as it takes so much pressure of us as working parents to know a great lunch is provided – great job Ash and Jodi
