How Diederik Jones’ sporting career was ruined before it started
This is Diederik Jones’ life story. A man of 24 years, in the prime of his life. Diederik grew up in a suburb near Sydney, his family consisting of Mum, Dad and two sisters, Diederik was the second child.
At an early age it was obvious that Diederik was very talented in sports. The round ball was always at his feet. His older sister’s tennis racquet was more his companion than hers. On summer days when the family went out to relax, young Diederik always found his pleasure in the water. His Dad called him a water rat. It was his parents’ mission to guide Diederik towards his goal in life; to become a sportsman who would bring fame and fortune to the family and, of course, also bring joy into his own life.
Football was his biggest passion. At the age of six he joined a club, in addition to his own training sessions. He was also involved in a lot of football clinics. He and his family truly believed that doing a lot of exercise would benefit his development. As the years progressed, Diederik was selected for several representative teams. It was obvious that he would one day become a contender for Socceroos selection.
But, as far as Dad and Mum were concerned, football was not the only sport in which Diederik was talented. Being real tennis fanatics, they supported him to become the next Hewitt. The sky seemed to be the limit, until people around him noticed that the expected progression in his development didn’t continue.
At the age of 16 his development stagnated. Diederik became just another player, one who, at the age of 24, didn’t even want to look at a ball!
Guided by the enthusiasm of those around him the focus was on doing everything possible. His young body was not allowed to rest. He was having a great time doing training sessions, clinics, playing football matches, tennis practice and tennis matches. He not only became mentally fatigued, his body was also totally compromised. There was injury after injury. The prospect of a successful sporting career ended very quickly.
Parents always have their children’s best interests at heart. They will always support their kids wherever they can. But to find balance in life, the things you do are very important. In Diederik’s case, there was no rest. He is typical of many of our children who want a career in sport.
At IFS we recognise the danger of being overloaded. As such, we provide a balanced sports programme guiding athletes to their full potential.
Balance is essential in everyone’s life.
