‘Houses’ play an important role in a college’s history and student life. In many cases, each house is named after a historical figure, saint, famous alumni or notable regional landmark. Other more arbitrary names – animal names or colours, for example – are also often used. In time, IFS students will read about Chapman, Roberts, Dolan and Spindler and the significant roles they played in establishing the Central Coast Sports College.
History suggests that the house system is predominately a British concept with modern day authors such as JK Rowling (Harry Potter books) having difficulty with translations of some foreign editions of her books. This is because languages such as Russian, have no word that adequately conveys the importance of belonging to a certain house, the loyalty owed or the pride in the prizes won by your individual house.
In establishing the IFS houses, our aim is to recognise the vast array of talent that our students demonstrate, and while not everyone is talented at everything, the participation and enthusiasm demonstrated by most at yesterday’s swimming carnival suggests that we are on track to an incredibly spirited house system. We expect that there will be many chances for our students to excel in future events that may include academics, music, drama, debating and other sporting days.
I’m hoping to encourage our students to contribute regularly for their ‘house’ through some websites that Matthew O’Neil has been the driving force behind. Currently under construction is the ‘House of Dolan’ – a site I’m experimenting with. I will include the link below for anyone interested in taking a look. Feedback, questions and suggestions are, of course, always welcome. http://dolanhouse.ifsstudent.com
