As a PE teacher who is used to traditional methods of teaching, Project Based Learning (PBL) has been a refreshing challenge which I am relishing! This week stage 5 (year 9 and 10) pupils have focused on “changing the image of football”, we have researched gender inequalities in sport and in groups pupils identified possible solutions to overcome barriers in participation with a focus on women’s football. After an interesting debate on stereotypes the students are now gathering information required for this project assessment. Today the students performed a live press conference style interview with two ex professional Matilda’s to gain an insight into real life experiences of discrimination towards women involved in the world of football.
I have slowly loosened the reigns of traditional teaching methods and have been pleasantly surprised in the results we are seeing already, through guided discussions and group work pupils are working in teams to produce a professional leaflet/pamphlet that will encourage people to think about gender inequalities in sport. I am looking forward to the presentations on Friday to see what this talented group produce.
Finally, a number of comments that I have received from pupils so far remind me what a great concept IFS has become and I am confident, with the current supportive ethos we have created, all students are now able to express themselves without fear of failure!
PDHPE has been this weeks focus next week we start our English projects so dust off those quills (or maybe iPads!!!).
