Recently, I joined the History Teachers group page on Facebook. Now you may be thinking, ‘Well, THAT does not sound very professional!’ I can assure you that it is! I am also a member of the English Teachers Association of NSW group page. Of course, most professional networking takes place at subject specific and other professional development events. However, most professional organisations will have a social media presence in one form or another and this helps its members to stay up to date with new developments in curricula and NESA requirements. It is also where we often share an outstanding activity or lesson that has inspired our students in their learning.
One such activity – which I found out about on the History Teachers page – was a ‘Cookie Dig’. Of course, I adapted the task for our learning space and it is proving to be one of the most engaging tasks so far during Stage 4 in History.
Here is the task:
CONGRATULATIONS! You have received a promotion and are now a qualified Archaeologist!Â
You are about to undertake the famous ‘COOKIE DIG’
- First you must obtain your site map, your dig site and your tools for digging.
- Go to the Archaeological Dig table at the end of Room 21.
- COLLECT:
- Worksheet
- Chocolate chip cookie
- Skewer
- Toothpick
