Recently I’ve been spending time each week in different work spaces and apart from it being a great experience in terms of getting to know exactly what other staff members’ days involve, it’s been very inspiring to see our volunteers doing what they do as well.
I wanted to know what inspires our volunteers to get involved, to give up their time, to give back to their communities. What helps them decide the causes that are important to them, and how they choose to make a contribution. So, I asked Jean Millar, volunteer extraordinaire at the CCSC café to let us in on the reasons she chooses to volunteer.
Hi I am Jean Millar and I am a volunteer in the CCSC cafe.
I retired from work several years ago after many years of nursing and aged care. When I retired, I knew I wanted to volunteer so spent a few years at Kariong primary college helping the children with their reading.
My husband Ian and I have lived in Kariong since coming to Australia and have walked our dogs around Mount Penang since it was a boys home, so I was very interested when the football college started.
Ian and I have been members of the Mariners since it started (Andre was my favourite) and we have always been interested in football; Ian, our sons and grandchildren all playing.
I asked Julie one day if they required any volunteers at the college and was thrilled to start helping in the cafe.
I am there every Monday and help with anything that is asked of me from setting out chairs, filling empty containers to washing dishes and cleaning up. My favourite job is serving the lunch. I love to see the kids coming back for seconds, thirds and sometimes fourth helpings. It is testimony to the quality of the food prepared by Ash, Scotty and Jodi and I am sure you have the best college cafe going. Everyone is so polite and appreciative of the work done in the cafe and I hope I can help for a few more years yet.
I love the concept of the football college. The teachers and trainers do such a great job and love to see the kids growing up. I wish you all success for the future.
