During week two of this term myself and fellow football coach Will Vazquez spent a week at The Australian Institute of Sport, kicking off our A-Licence studies. The A-licence is the second highest qualification in football with only the Pro-Licence being higher. It was great to be in a room with so many passionate coaches looking to learn, debate and discuss football. From ex pro players, to technical directors, to coaches involved in grass roots football, to those who wish to coach at the highest level, there were many discussions and questions around this beautiful game. With the Australian U20’s in camp at the AIS we were able to witness a training session put on by current U20’s coach Ufuk Talay (a former teammate of mine at North Queensland Fury) and current U23’s coach Josep Gombau. I managed to have a number of conversations with these two about their views on football and the current state of Australian football, particularly in youth. To be the best you can be you have to surround yourself with the best people and immerse yourself in the best atmosphere. To this end I have been trying to learn from as many different people as possible. From watching Newcastle Jets sessions to spending a week at Sydney FC with my former CCM gaffer Graham Arnold I have been trying to soak up as much info and advice as possible. This is where the A-Licence was so great. Having people from all over Australia from all different areas of football meant a wealth of knowledge in one room. It also made me think of our own environment here at CCSC and the wealth of experience and knowledge available to the students through teachers and coaches. Be the sponge and tap into their knowledge as they are more than willing to help you be your best.
