A seminal study has identified the essential employment skills for the next generation of college leavers. Students in the near future face a set of challenges unlike those that confronted past generations, including work casualisation, periods of under or unemployment, high work mobility and the necessity to create their own employment. The essential skills needed are IT creative skills, interpersonal skills, ability to work unsupervised and being able to research and obtain information independently. It is very empowering to see an affirmation of the college’s values reflected in the fact that our students have a greater chance at honing these skills as they are constantly encouraged to be independent and responsible learners, mindful of others and ethically minded. This will in future reflect on the way they manage their work challenges by making them highly desirable for any future employer or spurring them to entrepreneurial and independent careers.
