Two weeks ago I attended professional development days which were hosted by the AIS in the Hunter Valley. It was the same seminar that my colleague Gavin attended as a presenter on how we combine academic studies and a football/ tennis development program.
There were many workshops and guest speakers who delivered their insightful expertise on sports development and other areas essential to education.
One that I found to be of great value was on the topic of ‘Mindfulness’.
Mindfulness helps the mind become more observant and focused when dealing with the many challenges presented to us every day.
In a world where everyone is so busy and rushing around it is increasingly important for us to take time to be more aware of thoughts and feelings that allow us to practice focusing on positive behaviour.
“Practicing mindfulness has been shown to alter the structure and function of the brain, which is what allows us to learn, acquire new abilities and improve memory.” – Dr Romie Mushtaq
Mindfulness is beneficial in both the academic and sporting context and I am eager to learn more about the whole process and begin to develop this with our students. I will keep you posted.
