There was a recent article in the newspaper about our college. Perhaps you have read it. It made me feel very proud to be a part of such an extraordinary college but it also made me feel a little sad that there was little emphasis on the teaching staff.
Yes. I get it. I do work with quite the array of sporting Superstars and Legends. Our coaches are amazing. They are incredibly talented, have extensive resumes, and are wonderful role models and mentors for our students.
I do however, think this can also be said for our teachers. Our teachers are highly skilled and trained. We too have impressive resumes and abilities that can sometimes resemble that of a superhero.
In my opinion, the teachers who I work with are superstars too. They, actually we, are masters at what we do. We follow the same syllabus documents that every other college has to follow. We do it in less time and in a way that seems to effortlessly engage our students. We constantly reflect on what we are doing, and how we can do it better.
What makes me most proud though is the relationships we are able to build with our students. We do this with the full support from our management team, because they too value relationships above all else. Through strong and authentic relationships we are able to connect with our students. These connections enable us to structure learning in a way that meets the students in their reality.
So unlike the incredible coaches we work with, you will not find us on any sporting posters, or FIFA play station games. But you will find us in the learning spaces working closely with our students, your children, helping them become the best possible version of themselves. We are on the front line helping to not only educate them, but to prepare them for life.
The late Sidney Hook, an American philosopher who as well known for his contributions to the philosophy of history, education, ethics and political theory, once said:
Everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers, not methods and techniques. The teacher is the heart of the educational system.
… personally, I could not agree more.
