I would like to share some excellent tennis advice from our friends at Essential Tennis in the USA:
How much more confidence, fun and success would you have on the court if you could place your forehand and backhand shot on a dime?
LOTS more.
So what does it take?
How are top level players able to calmly and cooly place their groundstrokes wherever they want them to go?
Here are three of the biggest keys:
- Repeatable Swing Technique
Your swing mechanics tell the ball where to go … every little movement matters.
So it stands to reason if you use a different swing every time you’ll get different results, right?
Seems simple enough and yet how many tennis players are training for technique repeatability?
The answer is “very few”.
If you can narrow in on what techniques work (and which don’t) you’ll be way ahead of the competition. - Effective Adjustments
No matter how good you become you’ll always make unforced errors with your forehand and backhand…
…but the BEST players know how to make a simple, little tweak on the next swing and hit the ball exactly where they want it to go…
…instead of making the same mistake over and over again.
Usually the solutions are very simple, but the tricky part is correctly matching a certain mistake with the correct adjustment.
Most players repeat cliche phrases (“bend your knees”, “low to high”) without any idea if they even directly affect the mistake they just made. - High Quality Practice
If you want to hit the most accurate groundstrokes of your life then you need to practice for it.
Just hitting balls isn’t good enough. You need to use specific targets as often as possible.
There should also be some kind of goal you’re trying to achieve and focus needs to be high.
Without this kind of purposeful practice you won’t get the results you’re capable of.
99 per cent of your peers aren’t doing this, so if you do it will give you a huge advantage.
Now you know what it takes, and that’s half the battle.
