Bouncebackability is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from a setback”. The word was first coined by ex-footballer and manager Iain Dowie.
As a coach, bouncebackability is a quality I value in both the teams and individuals that I work with on a daily basis. It is essential in life to be able to bounce back quickly from setbacks and not to dwell too heavily when the outcome of situations is not as you planned.
Particularly in football when a team is defeated or suffers a loss, it is important to analyse the game, learn from the mistakes and not allow the setbacks to dishearten us. It is inevitable that throughout life you will be faced with challenges and setbacks, however it is how you recover and learn from these challenges that is the most important lesson.
If a match is not won, don’t see it as a loss but rather an opportunity to learn. Consider the different solutions to the football problems, maybe a different formation would have been more effective against the opposition?
Dwelling on a loss and getting frustrated won’t make it any better and definitely won’t make you a better footballer. Instead, learn from the mistakes made and recover quickly. Be a player who demonstrates bouncebackability.
