The current Australian PDHPE curriculum has a major focus on Australians health and much of the syllabus is theory based. Students at CCSC are independent learners who often like to challenge the ‘norm’ and as a result the delivery of the HSC course at CCSC may look a little different to other colleges. Our approach is unique as we deliver the full syllabus focusing on the key skills required to master each core or elective unit, but add many practical elements, guest speakers and visits to real-world sport and recreation facilities.
Being a sports college our cohort generally learn more when they are involved in the process, fully engaged and entertained. Recently I have completed my own website that is user friendly for the modern teenager and combined with our HSC PDHPE facebook group we are continually interacting and supporting our class with their learning.
I love teaching PDHPE and enjoy the freedom I have to design my own lessons and adapt sessions to suit our sports-minded young adults. We have recently been attending various fitness centres to reinforce the ‘Factors Affecting Performance’ core unit through practical elements. It is so rewarding to have students tell me mid-training session or at half-time in a match, which energy system they are mainly using or how they are going to refuel at half-time to replenish glycogen stores. By designing lessons that are informative but enjoyable I feel students are far more likely to recall that information come exam time when the pressure is really on.
Australia’s fittest man in 2011 visited the class last week and spoke about his nutrition, training regime and how he remains psychologically strong under pressure. The class were mesmerised and had many questions for CrossFit master, Jason Haywood who was blown away by the college’s forward thinking philosophy and set up. Below are just a few images from the past two weeks illustrating what the Stage Six class have been up to:
