After a successful campaign at the FNSW Futsal School Championship in the tough Sutherland region, expectations were high for our home region when the event came to Niagara Park Stadium last week.
With a massive 120 college teams registered across the 14s,16s and open age groups, IFS was in for a tough task along with the added pressure of being the college that everyone wants to beat in the tournament.
DAY ONE
The event started with the Under 16s, with four of eight quarter finals spots in the boys competition filled by IFS teams, with the most exciting match of the day being played by our IFS Blue side against Terrigal High School. The two evenly matched teams finished regular time and golden goal in a nil all draw going to penalties which like the match itself were a very evenly matched spectacle. Noah Chaplain stepped into goals for the tenth penalty and pulled off a great save to win the match 5-4 on penalties.
The boys from IFS Blue then cruised into the Grand Final with a strong 5-0 win over IFS Orange. Facing Gosford High School, the boys had used up all their energy in the six previous matches on the day going down 3-1 despite still playing some excellent futsal.
The 16 girls came into the event confident, having already qualified for the state championships in Penrith but unfortunately it wasn’t their day. After flying through the group stage with ease going undefeated, the girls came up against the strong St Joseph’s Catholic College side in the semi finals, a side which also features three members of the IFS Futsal State League club. The match ended in a 2-2 draw and went on to penalties, which ended with St Joseph’s 4-3 victors, ending the day early for the girls.

IFS Red made it as far as the quarter finals going down 3-2 in a very tight match with eventual grand finalists Kincumber High School. IFS Blue went through undefeated with 36 goals for and only 8 against in eight matches to claim the Open Boys title with Zak Johnson scoring two great goals to secure the win over Kincumber High School in the Grand Final.
Fresh from their win in Sutherland, the Open Girls side continued their fine form going undefeated throughout the entire day, scoring 22 goals in their pool matches and only conceding 1 goal all day in the final seconds of their 10-1 victory over Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College.
The girls also played Kincumber High School in the grand final winning 2-0 with a controlled performance. Both goals scored by Emily Diaz.

DAY THREE
On the final day of the event it was the Under 14s turn and the biggest day of the event. Four of the IFS boys’ sides made it through the group stage undefeated powering into the finals with IFS Blue pushing through to secure their place in the grand final.
For the third time in two days, the decider was between IFS and Kincumber High School; this time it was a much closer battle ending regular time at 1 all. With no further goals scored in extra time, it came down to a penalty shootout. Once again, it was Noah Chaplain who was the hero of the penalty shootout, pulling off two fantastic saves on both Kincumber penalties, securing the victory for IFS.
The 14 Girls, once again made up mostly of girls much younger than their opposition with Kyara O’Brien who is 10 years old, Mia MacFarlane, Sian Johnson, Ella Cutcliffe and Ashleigh Bax all 12 years of age.
This wasn’t a consideration for the girls, going through the entire day undefeated, scoring an astonishing 38 goals in their 8 matches and just 2 goals against, including a 14-0 victory along the way, a massive feat when considering that each match is 14 minutes.
After a close call in the semi finals against Terrigal Red, the girls went up against Gosford High School in the final winning 1-0 to claim the title.

It was a fantastic tournament for Central Coast Sports College contesting five of the six grand finals of the event, taking out four along the way and securing another five places in the state championship event held in Penrith in August to go along with the three others already qualified from the Sutherland event.
Next up all primary IFS football students, along with the IFS futsal development squads, travel down to Dural for the final regional round of the NSW Futsal Schools Championships before the State Championships.
