During my time as both a player and a coach, there have been many things that have come to my attention on the pitch. One of the most important of these is body language. The way a player projects themselves on the pitch is observed by their fellow players, coaches and the crowd. The way a player holds themselves on the pitch can say a lot about them as both a player and a person. The body language they display when they lose the ball or get beaten by another player can say more than what comes from their mouth.
The frustration players express in themselves or their fellow teammates through body language is often clear through simple actions like a drop of the head or throwing their arms up in the air. As a coach, it’s disheartening to see players heads drop when they lose the ball or a goal is scored against them. As a player, it is essential to be aware of the body language you display when you are on the pitch. You should remain calm and controlled at all times, and stay within a positive head space. Remember, “the way you act can often say much more about you than what you say”.
