In English Stage 5 have started off the year with some work on poetry. When I announced that this is what we were doing multiple moans and groans were heard throughout the classroom. In an attempt to avoid these moans and groans I have tried to steer away from the traditional idea of “boring” poetry. Stage 5’s study of poetry is taking a more modern twist focusing on “Slam Poetry” and “Spoken Word”. These are poems performed by passionate, talented poets to an audience and are usually centred around significant issues, such as racial inequality, human rights and women’s rights. I am hoping to turn Stage 5’s dread of poetry into a love of poetry – Wish me luck!
Below is a link of one the poems we have studied in the first couple of weeks.
