As a rule I do not subscribe to any form of social media and this is my first, (albeit reluctant), entrée into this arena.
Yesterday, Essena O’Neill posted a YouTube clip that made headlines around the world as the 19-year-old model from Queensland detailed her decision to quit social media because it promoted an image of life that was “fake” and made her miserable despite the “likes”.
This supposed“retirement” of Essena O’Neill brings me to ask;
Why do social media followers lap up what they see and read and even financially support these “social media stars” as true representations of themselves and their lives?
Do they find it fun? Informative? Is it as a form of escapism? Vicarious living?
That doesn’t sound so bad after all!
