Public speaking is a valuable skill that is taught throughout the academic program at IFS. Learning how to speak in front of a group of people is also important in equipping students with the confidence to address an audience throughout their lives.
In 2015, two Year 9 students, Madeline Bowron and Dominique Johns represented our college at the NSW Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition. Maddie’s speech was titled ‘Addiction’ and she effectively linked this to social media and the use of technology by young people. Maddie spoke with a passion that was genuinely heartfelt.
Humour is one of the most difficult techniques to include in public speaking. However, Dom is an expert at this and his speech was very engaging for the audience. His speech was titled ‘Technology and Teenagers’. Both students’ speeches were creative and interesting.
Topics covered by students from other colleges included unusual animals, war, racism and creativity. The audience of teachers, students and parents appreciated the effort and skill with which all speakers presented.
Competition was very strong on the day and although our students did not make it into the next round, they both received positive feedback from the adjudicator and also some useful suggestions.
Congratulations to Maddie and Dom on an outstanding effort!
