_______________
As a relatively new member of IFS, something I have found that I love about the college is the flexibility of our learning spaces.
There are so many possibilities open to the students as this method allows for an open learning environment in which students can engage and openly participate in collaboration and discussions with their peers. I often find myself wishing that this style of learning was around when I was in primary college!
This form of studying and teaching enables each student an essential balance within their learning. The flexibility of our space enables them to find their best way of learning; whether it be sitting at their desks, on the lounge or sprawled out on the floor, (as many of our students in Stage 3 are often found).
In our classroom we have recently received new ‘lap desks’, which has made life a bit easier (and perhaps a little more fun!) for our students who enjoy working together on the floor around the room as they have a sturdy surface to complete their work on, whilst still being comfortable. The benefits of the students choosing their workspace and where they work best I think is clear, as it has an influence on student attitudes, behaviours and particularly the student’s attention span.
I think this is a great aspect of our classroom, particularly as I am one of those people who finds that I work best whilst moving around and not always sitting in a structured manner at a desk.
As this is a new method for us, we are only beginning to see the positive changes this is bringing to our students’ education, but hopefully there are many!
