Stage 2 has begun Term 3 with a roar! ‘Is the World Indestructible?’ is the driving question for our new project.
Already in the first two weeks of term we’ve explored many natural disasters, their causes and the results. Studying earthquakes, volcanoes, cyclones, tsunamis, floods and bushfires has provided us with a basis from which to gain insight into the living nature of the planet. Our students have responded with tremendous interest in learning about these fascinating topics. Primarily this project is Science based, however there are many links to other learning areas; Mathematics – where we are collecting data to translate into various graphs; Geography – locating the sites/countries of natural disasters; Geology – studying the earth from the outside in; and of course English – naturally all our research is being written down and recorded. On top of the academic skills we are working on, our project involves Creative Arts and Design & Technology as the students create their own landscapes, cities and forests on platforms approximately 1200mm square. Eventually, when the constructions are completed at the end of the term, we hope to be able to simulate the natural disasters we’ve been studying.
The construction involves the students building using paper mache. This week we were very fortunate to have had a retired art teacher come in and introduce the technique to our students, which they took to with incredible enthusiasm. (See video below) What we thought would be one or two sessions turned into almost a whole day’s activity, – a day very well spent!

The video was awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic! I love that you have the flexibility to just continue with an engrossing activity, rather than being committed to stopping and moving on to the next task. Go PBL!
