Apart from uprooted trees, broken fences and flooding, last month’s storm resulted in a broken TV antenna at the Browns. Thirty-five days on from that frightful night and we have mysteriously loved the sense of calm no TV has brought into our home. As I write this blog, our family has eaten dinner, cleaned the house, the three kids have done their reading, they are all fast asleep and I’m guessing the State of Origin has only just begun. This is in stark contrast to what our house would have been like just over a month ago.
This accidental hero story of no TV certainly hasn’t made us into the world’s best parents overnight as we still confiscate iPods, iPads and iPhones on a regular basis. However, previous TV time has now turned into more reading, writing, drawing, playing outside and the big one, earlier bed times, (and not just for the kids). I actually look forward to getting into bed and reading my book.
Reducing “screen time entertainment” for our children has been heavily publicised over recent times and many authors and educators such as Nancy H Blakey insist that filling kids time with screen entertainment actually stops them from responding to what their hearts really want to do. Now, I’m not saying TV has left the Brown household forever, especially on the day when our insurance company has just given us the go ahead. However, I’m sure you can see why I am baulking at the idea of getting it fixed.
