Competition…
Being a professional footballer means I have been surrounded by a very competitive atmosphere for a big part of my life. There is nothing wrong with being competitive and having a desire to win or achieve, however it is very important to be able to cope in situations where you don’t win and to learn from these occasions. I think it is safe to say that not many people like losing but sometimes winning doesn’t necessarily have to be beating the other team, but rather, being better than you were yesterday.
A footballing career will always be filled with setbacks; teams that you don’t make, injuries that you sustain and teams that get relegated. It is very easy to allow these setbacks to affect your attitude, especially if you are a competitive person. Acknowledging that to be successful doesn’t actually mean that you have to be better than everyone will allow you to focus on your own abilities, your own strengths and weaknesses. As individuals we all have weaknesses that we need to work on; you may not be the fastest on the pitch or have the strongest left foot, but as long as you work to be better than you were yesterday you have won.
