This week is food allergy week.
The concept is simple. Adopt an allergy, and try and live within its boundaries for a week. It’s not as easy as you’d think, with many processed and prepared foods containing a myriad of ingredients. Just imagine being allergic to one specific flavour enhancer or living with legitimate gluten intolerances. It means every item you eat has to be scrutinised and planned.
Students have been encouraged to take part, and to paint one fingernail to show their commitment to the week. It also serves as a reminder to keep an eye out for the foods that are catalysts for their chosen allergy.
At the Cafe this week we have taken an extra step of making a “green zone”. This is an area that our food allergy students are aware of, where they can come to get their specialised meal. It has been kept discrete enough so as not to make them feel different, but ensures they don’t get missed in the large line of students we feed every day.
So why not give it a go? www.foodallergyaware.com.au
