During week two, Years 7 and 8 experienced camping and mountain hiking just south of Sydney and explored the Southern Highlands’ thick forests, treks and beautiful bushland.
I checked into camp early Wednesday morning relieving Coach Dan Barrett after his three days of camping duties. I was greeted with smiles by all the IFS teachers, camp instructors, and all the students – what a great feeling! My first observation was how engaged the teachers and students were in camping activities, including packing backpacks and preparing for a journey in the wild.
We set out on a long trail, without knowing where it was leading us! We were anxious and worked together to support each other as the next few hours unfolded. We exchanged great stories, told some funny jokes and admired the bushland, the wildlife and the fantastic landscapes along the way.
We all arrived at the campsite excited and looking forward to a well-deserved break. But there was no rest for us – Courtney our camp guide and instructor assigned the workforce teams, the cooking team and the hunting for wood team.
As the night fell and the rain began to fall, it only added to the atmosphere of the beautiful surroundings and our team bonding. The sound of the rain bouncing of the tent brought us peace but did add a little chill to the air, and ended the night earlier than expected.
On Thursday morning during our breakfast gathering, Courtney made a surprise announcement. Our departure time was to be 8am and we were to embark on a 20km hiking adventure with a 25kg backpack each.
Hope the photos can describe the journey and give you the same feeling that the students and I enjoyed.
such a good idea to have the camp at the start of the year. Good for students and teachers to see each other in a different environment other than college. Good bonding. Blake really enjoyed it. Good read. Thx Danny
