I would like to send out a huge thank you to the IFS students and their parents (and grandparents) who have been coming out and supporting our IFS Men’s Futsal team at our Saturday night games at the Peninsula Leisure Centre. With our men’s team being made up of IFS coaches, an IFS teacher (Fiery Gav), a couple of local first grade players and, most importantly, our upcoming IFS senior students, it is hands down the most rewarding part of the night to see the smiling faces of our Stage Two students in attendance.
Seeing IFS students at these matches reminds me of my younger days at Jubilee Park, Long Jetty where every Sunday I watched all the senior grades of The Entrance Soccer Club. When I say watched, I mean I found a place to kick with my mates close to the field. The best part was definitely half time and full time when we got to play in the goals (I hope they still allow that these days). It was a competition to see who could score the best goal from a cross and because no one wanted to be the crosser, it was always decided by scissors, paper, rock. A bicycle kick was always high on the agenda, but any first time volley or header would make the post kick discussion. I remember these days more than any other of my childhood.
With family spare time being such a rarity, I know what commitment it takes to leave the comfort of our homes, especially on a Saturday night, but I have also seen where this type of involvement can lead. So to Chaise, Jesse, Makkai, Xavier, Darcey, Jack, Kai, Sean and Sammy (I’m sorry if I have missed anyone), thank you again for coming to watch your coaches, it means more than you think. I hope you learnt something about football, even if it was from the opposition. My Sundays at Jubilee Park were filled with laughter, tears, sunburn, treats, heroes, villains, family and friends. This type of involvement made me want to play football and be involved in football for the rest of my life. I saw your paths flash before my eyes on the more recent Saturday nights. Keep loving the game boys.
