On the recent stage six sport and recreation camp a number of students found themselves out of their comfort zone. As a teacher at IFS one of my main goals is to guide students through their time with us in an attempt to create a well rounded individual.
On the second morning of camp we hiked to the top of a cliff where the group was faced with an option; walk all the way back down, or abseil to the valley floor below. For some, fear immediately set in and a nervous tension filled the air. I spoke about the ‘fight or flight’ response and how in life we can only really move forward if we challenge ourselves and face our fears. We are all afraid at times and it is during these times of stress or discomfort that we ultimately end up being our strongest.
Going back to my initial point about students developing as people, I witnessed our students demonstrating how far they have come. From a group of individuals who didn’t know each other two years ago, our students have become a cohesive team willing to face their fears head on and challenge their own limits. I was extremely proud of them as I sat back and looked on. They showed each other support, helping motivate the more nervous ones while keeping the mood upbeat and positive. Even the most petrified gained success and, as a result, the stage six group has bonded and is now closer than ever.
