A Message from the ‘Praccy’!
For the last five weeks of term, I was lucky enough to complete my third teaching ‘prac’ in the Stage 3 classroom. What a fantastic, inspiring and enlightening experience it has been! I have to be honest, it was all pretty overwhelming to begin with. The difference between other colleges and the IFS/ITS project-based learning environment is significant, not to mention the unusually large class size and demographic. Needless to say, I struggled ,at first, to get my head around it – a feeling I’m sure some of you as parents have shared when making the big decision to send your children to such an innovative college. However, after a few days and with some wise words from Karen, I felt more comfortable and confident in the classroom and began to get my ‘teacher voice’ on.
What a privilege to be involved in teaching a drama project about change. The students absolutely amazed me; freely discussing complex issues about money, homelessness and racism; constantly coming to me with suggestions to improve their play; and really taking ownership of all aspects, like costuming and props. To top it all off they were utterly brilliant (I’m sure those of you who saw them would agree) when they pulled it all together to produce an entertaining, emotional and thought-provoking performance!!
I have not stopped talking about this project, the students and the college since I finished up and I have great joy in sharing with people what an exciting college IFS/ITS is. I have to say (again) a big thank you to Paul, Laura, all of the teachers (especially Karen) and coaches for their help and support, for welcoming me with open arms and for sharing their knowledge and experience with me. Their passion and enthusiasm for education is truly inspiring.
