The word ‘invictus’ is Latin for unconquered. It is the title of a movie starring Morgan Freeman who plays the part of Nelson Mandela, South African President. Matt Damon also stars in the movie as captain of the Springboks, Francois Pienaar. The story revolves around the South African rugby team vying to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup being played in their own country during the turmoil of transition from apartheid.
Hesterine and I decided to use the wet weather indoor session to watch this movie with our groups. We wanted our kids to focus on the leadership qualities of the captain and also the attributes of the team ethic shown in the movie. The movie was very engaging and the audience very focussed, regardless of the fact we were watching a different code of football.
We asked the kids for feedback on what the captain and team demonstrated in order to achieve their success. One student even understood that the captain was not only in the rugby team but Mandela was also playing the role of captain of the whole country. This powerful true story of the struggle for unity in South Africa during its transition from apartheid to a democratic society was represented brilliantly, with just enough action to keep the kids fully engaged.
Learning through inspirational movies like Invictus creates opportunities for good discussion on team building and leadership by watching and listening to great characters demonstrating the required values. Further inspiration for self improvement can be drawn from these types of learning exercises.
I wanted to make sure we weren’t going to show the kids a movie sending the wrong messages, so I googled Invictus before the viewing session. I discovered the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley which added further inspiration to my own cause. Mr Henley endured life changing experiences that challenged him in ways most of us will hopefully never have to face. The verses are powerful and passionate, two attributes shown by good leaders and good team players.
Take a moment to read the poem and hopefully be inspired in your own way.
