Yesterday saw the HSC PDHPE class visit our local Anytime Fitness centre. Students are currently focusing on how to improve performance. After some intense psychology lessons it was a chance for students and staff to let off some steam in a gym environment while reinforcing their learning through practical activities.
It was extremely pleasing for me to watch the enthusiastic class push their bodies in the gym while still using the correct terminology when analysing their training partner. Students had to focus on the energy systems being used during various movements as well as identify the benefits of using free vs fixed weights/hydraulic machines. There was a real buzz on the gym floor and from the photos attached you can see firsthand some of the training methods experienced. I often find that in PDHPE the best learning occurs when we reinforce prior knowledge through practical sessions.
Without even realising it, the entire class answered over one hundred HSC revision questions in the two hours they were training hard. Through reciprocal coaching, providing each other with relevant feedback and with me quizzing their movements, method of training, predominant energy system used, types of learning and forms of motivation we managed to revise a large chunk of content in a fun, dynamic way.
Next week the class will be put through their paces with a personal trainer testing their strength, power and muscular endurance. In the classroom, we’ll move onto the effects of drugs on sport and investigate what have been major technological advances in sport over the past decade.
