Stage 5 students have just concluded their independent research projects. They had to choose a scientific fact they wished to check and design an experiment to do so. They had to gather equipment, seek cooperation from other students and carry out measurements. They had to compile tables and graph their results, draw conclusions and, ideally, be able to evaluate and appraise their own work offering alternative ways of doing the same work. Finally they had to write and present a ‘scientific’ report following a pretty comprehensive model.
Inevitably the reports cover a wide range of results, from outstanding to pretty basic, however, what has impressed me has been the general atmosphere of enthusiasm with which this exercise has been embraced and the eagerness with which most students have sought guidance and support. Students have shown the true spirit of the college by adopting an attitude of cooperation and shunning the usual competitive spirit that generally pervades exercises such as this. Most have shown great perseverance when faced with difficult tasks or with adverse results. Finally all students have shown great resilience and a definite sense of humour. Well done stage 5!
