I am not much of a tennis player, but I don’t think that tennis players train with a completely different racket to the one they play their matches with. Similarly, on the football field, I am sure players use the boots and shin pads that they are used to wearing. Incorrect equipment can put athletes at a real disadvantage.
Students need equipment in mathematics too. This term students in both Stage 4 and 5 will be heavily reliant on a calculator. I know that phones and ipads have calculator apps but these cannot be used for assessment tasks now or in the HSC.
Students will need time to get used to the different mathematical functions and what works on their phone or iPad may not work on their calculator. Just like athletes, maths students must have the correct equipment and be comfortable using it.
