I have always thought of myself as a good judge of character and after being at IFS for almost a year now, I have hundreds of names, faces and behaviours upon which I have formed my opinions. While I have always liked the phrase, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” I am also seeing many cases where I have ‘jumped the gun’.
The Athletics Carnival last Thursday allowed me to view many students in a different light and I was extremely pleased to see that a couple of them, in particular, proved me wrong. These students showed me a growth mindset that I did not know existed and by that I mean, they were never going to win the race, but they kept going anyway. For these particular students, I would be confident in saying that coming second or even third does not happen too many times and that is what impressed me so much. They took it on the chin, lined up in order of places like everybody else and walked away knowing they gave it everything.
Growing up as a small, skinny, freckly kid from The Entrance, I spent many years enjoying proving people wrong. Lately though, I have found it more enjoyable when people prove me wrong. Remember, effort above all else.
