Stage 6 students are well into their HSC course in PDHPE. This week they have been developing their understanding of the health status in Australia. This includes how the government uses statistics to decide on which groups are priorities and which illnesses and diseases to target. The students are busy planning a reciprocal teaching presentation focusing on an identified disadvantaged group with links between the determinants and the role of governments and communities in facilitating opportunities for them to achieve better health.
With only nine teaching weeks remaining until the students take their first HSC exams, there is, for the majority of students, an atmosphere of working purpose and focus in the class. There seems to be a realisation of the importance of the next nine weeks and I have felt a shift in students’ attitudes and eagerness to apply themselves.
This will be the first class to sit their HSC exams at IFS. This brings excitement to teachers and students as they take the next step in their future and that of IFS. It is also a time when students begin to feel a higher level of stress and anxiousness and fear of the unknown.
My advice to stage 6 students is to prepare early. Take advantage of the teachers and their willingness to provide support and knowledge to achieve the very best you can. One of my favourite quotes:
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.
