Exam Techniques
How to go about nailing that HSC exam? Read on.
• Get familiar with your paper structure before the exam. Do you know how many sessions there are in the paper, what type of answers are required and how long does the examination go for? Find out now at the Board of Studies website (Past HSC papers).
• On the front page of your HSC paper you will find suggested times for each session. These are a very good indication of how long it should take you to complete that session and complete all of your paper efficiently. Stick to it by dividing the time by the number of questions in the session. You will then know how long you should spend answering each question.
• Drawings and diagrams. If your question asks for a drawing or diagram, produce something accurate but simple. There is no need for three-dimensional or fancy artwork – this will not attract extra marks but it will take up time that you should use answering other questions.
• Answer questions efficiently. The space allocated for a question is a good indicator of how you should develop an answer. Much longer or shorter answers, while not necessarily incorrect, are generally an inefficient use of time. Be familiar with subject terminology needed for longer explanations.
• Answer the question asked. Surprisingly a number of students provide a large amount of correct information not relevant to the question asked. Identify question keywords and answer them. Common keywords are: Explain, Identify, Outline, Compare and contrast.
• Try not to stress. The easiest way to do this is to sit your exams following a decent preparation so you are self assured and confident in your own capabilities.
