Today we spent the day at the Dural NSW Futsal Tournament. While I could talk all about how well we did and how amazing our children are (which is all true) what I really want to talk about is how we are developing our team culture.
At our last futsal tournament in Newcastle I noticed there was a lack of support from our spectators for other teams while they were playing. So, when we got back to college I made a point of talking about this and how important people/fans in the stands are in creating a hometown advantage. This was further reiterated when Joey came into our class to talk about her experience at the Women’s World Cup in North Korea. She spoke about how daunting a stadium full of 40,000 people cheering for the opposition can be. Part of her team’s game plan ended up being keeping the ball just to silence the crowd, so to speak.
So this is our aim during this tournament – cheering and supporting as many of our teams as possible. Every time we had a spare moment and we weren’t playing, there we were supporting our other teams. We made sure that it was all positive and healthy. One of our teams got through to the semi-final and all our other teams were there cheering them on. We went on to win the game 2-1. As one of the players who came up to me after the game said, “If it wasn’t for you guys cheering, we would never have done it.”
That team went onto the final and with all the cheering and support, won the game. We got our team home from the sideline. It is amazing how important support off-the-field is to the players on the field. Keep it up primary you did a great job!!
