How do you go about answering HSC questions? Here’s a few things to keep in mind:
• Read the question and make sure you understand what it is asking. Identify the crucial keyword(s) of the question, (such as explain, compare, contrast, illustrate) and make sure you address that.
• Scaffold your answer. Try and develop a framework in your mind for answering the question efficiently and succinctly. Many questions can be answered in point form if you wish to do so.
• Use correct terminology. Avoid using terms you vaguely know just because they may sound impressive or appropriate. Attempt to use specific examples rather than vague, all encompassing statements.
• Keep an eye on time and try to keep to the time allocation outlined on the front page of your HSC paper.
• Check that your question flows logically and makes sense.
• Attempt all questions.
From the above it should be obvious that subject knowledge is only part of the story. Of equal, if not greater, importance is the ability to convey that knowledge to the HSC marker who is going to read your answers.
